BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Vincent Poole’s unique style combines elements of pop art, fashion, and advertising with a dash of British humour. With a wink of the eye, he presents the dynamic lifestyle of the London in-crowd in brightly coloured collages. Whether they depict the stylish city diva walking her Great Dane along the street or the tired employees smoking a cigarette in the courtyard, his collages capture the idiosyncrasies of Londoners and serve as demographic examinations of life in Britain’s capital.

The artist creates his life-size silhouettes using transparent films printed with striking images from the worlds of fashion and advertising, the logos of luxury brands, and symbols of the capital such as the sign for the London Underground. To construct his sophisticated silhouettes, he places colour transparencies alongside and over top of each other, layer by layer, affixing them to his canvas with pushpins. The simplicity of the method is matched by the power of the resulting effect: Each figure illuminates and transmits its message like a giant billboard. Exclusively for LUMAS, Poole has now made his collages available as cut-outs, an evolution of the cut paper silhouettes by artists like Henri Matisse.

Poole first studied visual arts at London’s famous Goldsmiths College before moving across the city to study sculpture at Kingston College. The diverse sources of inspiration for his work do not just come from academia, however. Poole worked as an Art Director in the advertising industry for almost a decade. Today, his work can be found in numerous public and private collections.
